Dumpster vs. Home Depot dump trailer: what it really costs

Renting a dump trailer yourself can look cheap until you add the tow, the landfill fees, and the paperwork. Here is our delivered 15-yard dump trailer next to Home Depot's largest one, with the numbers on the table.

For a rental of 3 days or more, our all-in price is about 53% of Home Depot's: $470 vs. $890.51. That's for a trailer with twice the capacity, delivered and hauled away, with 2 tons of disposal included.

Home Depot's total includes its optional damage protection and 8% sales tax, and leaves out the landfill fees you'd pay yourself. Home Depot figures checked October 5, 2026.

Same footprint, twice the trailer

Both trailers are 7 feet wide and 14 feet long. The difference is the walls, the weight limit, and who does the work.

With our rental, disposal of the first 2 tons is included. If you haul it yourself, the landfill charges by the ton.

Is Home Depot ever cheaper?

Sometimes, yes. For a small, light, one-day project, if you have a vehicle that can tow a trailer and you don't mind the landfill run, a one-day Home Depot rental can come in under our flat price. Here is the one-day math with dump fees added:

Your loadHome Depot, 1 day, with dump feesBig Skye, all-in
1 ton$319.55 to $380.84$470
2 tons (what ours includes)$342.26 to $464.84$470

Dump fees run from the lowest to the highest published rate in the counties we serve ($22.71 to $84 per ton). Home Depot's total includes its optional protection and 8% tax. None of it counts your tow vehicle's fuel, your time, or the drive.

But check the capacity before you decide:

  • Their trailer holds 7.26 cubic yards with 2-foot walls. Ours holds 14.52. A load that fills our trailer is about two trips in theirs, and every extra trip is another drive and another dump fee.
  • Bulky loads, like furniture or yard debris, run out of room before they run out of weight. Heavy loads use up the weight limit sooner: 5,800 lb in theirs, 14,000 lb in ours.
  • A longer or bigger job moves Home Depot to its weekly rate ($890.51 all-in), where our flat price is far lower.

What a Home Depot rental agreement puts on you

This is a standard equipment-rental agreement. But renting a trailer for a weekend project means taking on more responsibility than most people read closely. This is our summary, in our words, of the Equipment and Vehicle Rental Agreement text we reviewed on October 5, 2026. Read the current agreement before you rent.

With a Big Skye rental, we own the equipment, its upkeep, and the trip to the landfill.
